Issue Position: Homeland Security

Americans are united in our commitment to defend our nation against terrorism. In the few years since 9/11, we've made significant progress in protecting our homeland and rooting out terrorist networks at home and abroad.

Senator Levin believes we can fight terrorists, secure our borders, and protect our communities while respecting the civil liberties that are the bedrock of our nation.

Much work to improve America's homeland security has already been accomplished, like strengthening security at our airports and along our Southern border — but there's still much more to be done.

Carl is fighting for federal funding for firefighters, police, and health care workers in Michigan and across America. State and local governments cannot be expected to bear the entire funding burden.

In addition, while protecting our Southern border is important, our Northern border with Canada has traditionally received much less attention and resources from the federal government — even though it stretches 4,000 miles, twice the length of our Southern border. And this is a particularly important issue for Michigan, which has the longest part of the US-Canadian border in the contiguous 48 states and three of the four busiest crossing points on the Northern border. These points of entry are vital economic links for Michigan's economy and the economy of the Midwest. Carl Levin is working to ensure that we dedicate enough resources and attention to strengthening our Northern border, and ensuring first responders along the border can communicate with their Canadian counterparts in the event of an emergency.

Finally, much more must be done to strengthen security at our seaports, at nuclear and chemical plants, and at other sensitive facilities that may be terrorist targets. As the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and a senior member of both the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Levin is a key leader in the effort to strengthen our homeland defenses.
