U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., came through Alexandria Saturday as part of her "Winning for Louisiana" tour through the state.

Landrieu spoke to a group of more than 75 people about issues facing veterans, troops and military families.

Landrieu's visit to Alexandria comes one day after she qualified for re-election to her Senate seat.

The event kicked off Saturday afternoon at the Alexandria International Airport with a welcome from Alexandria Mayor Jacques Roy followed by an introduction by retired city judge and World War II veteran George Foote.

"Our military veterans provided us with most of the freedoms that Americans enjoy today," Landrieu said. "I fight to provide them with the protection they need at war, and the care they need when they come home."

One of the issues the senator is working on is to help provide financial assistance for families of National Guardsmen and reservists who have gone to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and left their families without the source of income they provide, Landrieu's press secretary Scott Schneider said.

Landrieu said she has worked to increase Guard and Reserve troops' pay and to provide tax credits for businesses to keep providing income during the troops' deployments, according to a campaign press release.

"I won't give up until our military families are taken care of," Landrieu said.

Alexandria was the fifth stop on a seven-city tour around the state, which includes Shreveport, Monroe, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Schneider said.

"It was a great event," Schneider said. "It's exciting to see a strong show of support across the state."
