Landrieu Comments on Senate Passage of Medicare Bill

United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today made the following statement on the Senate's passage of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act by a 69-30 vote. The bill will now be sent to the President's desk, but the President has threatened a veto. Both the Senate and House passed the bill with a sufficient majority to override a veto, signaling both chambers could override a veto and make the bill law without the President's signature.

Sen. Landrieu said.

"The Senate stepped up for doctors, seniors and our military today by passing this bill that prevents payment cuts to our physicians that care for our seniors on Medicare. These cuts were also threatening TRICARE, which serves our uniformed military and their families.

"Doctors in Louisiana have faced extreme challenges in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Our health care infrastructure suffered greatly from the storms. But today the Senate gave our doctors and our seniors much needed security, and I hope the President follows suit and quickly signs this bill."
