Lampson Statement On DC Gun Ban Decision

Supreme Court Overturns DC Gun Ban; First Ever Ruling on Second Amendment

Following the U.S. Supreme Courts decision to strike down the DC gun ban in DC v. Heller, Rep. Nick Lampson, D-Stafford, released the following statement in support of the court's decision:

"The right to protect yourself and your family is as vital as the right to free speech or freedom of the press. The Supreme Court's decision underscores our country's commitment to protecting the fundamental rights on which America was founded. Today, America has reaffirmed its promise to the right to bear arms."

In February 2008, Rep Lampson, along with dozens of his colleagues in Congress, filed with the Supreme Court a brief for amici curiae, or a "friend of the court" brief, contesting the constitutionality of D.C.'s ban on armed self-defense.

Rep. Lampson has been a staunch advocate of the rights of gun owners in the United States. Rep. Lampson has consistently received an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association (NRA) and has enjoyed the endorsement of the NRA throughout his tenure in Congress.

Also, Rep. Lampson is a co-sponsor of H.R. 1399, the District of Columbia Personal Protection Act, a bill that prohibits D.C. from enacting laws or regulations that discourage or eliminate the private ownership or use of firearms by law-abiding citizens.
