Issue Position: Walt On the Issues

Growing up on my family's farm in eastern Washington, you could trust people when they looked you in the eye and shook your hand. But now, in Washington DC our Congressman is more concerned about political grandstanding than giving us a straight answer on the challenges facing the nation and Idaho.

For more than thirty years I've been effective at building businesses and creating jobs in Idaho. In fact, during my 16 years running TJ International, we went through several serious economic downturns.

When times were tough, I was always straight with my employees about the challenges ahead, and I asked them to focus on those things that leave you stronger when the tough times are over. Now I want to take those same skills and put them to work in Washington, D.C. for you—and our children.

That's how we do things here in Idaho. We don't wait around for a handout. We don't borrow and spend. We don't waste money on uneconomic pet projects. We don't point fingers and complain about those blocking our way.

In short, we don't run our businesses and live our lives the way folks do in Washington, D.C. In Idaho we buckle down, work hard and solve the problems we face.

Our nation's problems can be overcome with simple Idaho pragmatism. When I'm in Congress, I'll show that kind of leadership. I'll be a Congressman you can count on.

The biggest problem facing us all is the economy. We don't need tax rebates and other Band-Aides - we need a real recovery plan that gives the economy a jump-start by investing in things that work.

As a CEO, I made sure that my companies invested in the basics when times were tough. And one of the best investments Congress can make right now is in new energy technologies. Imagine a bio-fuel plant in Western Idaho, processing wheat straw from nearby fields. Or a plant creating ethanol from logging waste. Those are the projects government should stimulate to help the economy recover and create more good paying jobs in Idaho.
