Senator Chambliss' Statement on South Korea Lifting Ban on US Beef

Statement

Date: April 18, 2008
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), Ranking Republican Member on the Senate Agriculture Committee, today issued the following statement regarding South Korea reopening their market to U.S. beef, which had been suspended since 2003:

"Today's announcement is certainly welcome news for our American cattle producers and processors, but also long overdue. Our negotiators should be commended for their diligence in securing open access for all beef products from animals of all ages to the Korean market. I am hopeful that other foreign nations will follow the example of the South Koreans and normalize beef trade without delay. If this deal holds and Democratic leadership recognizes the merits of the agreement, I believe it will allow the Congress to begin the process to approve the Korea-United States Free Trade Agreement before the end of the year."
