Statement on the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement

Press Release

Date: April 7, 2008
Location: Portland, ME
Issues: Trade

U.S. Representative Tom Allen issued the statement below in opposition to the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement that President Bush announced today he will send to Congress this week. Under "fast track" rules, Congress has 90 days in which to act.

"The Colombia Free Trade Agreement is bad for Maine and Maine workers. That is why I have already pledged to oppose it. President Bush speaks of compromise with Congress, yet he is using the Fast Track laws to force Congress to vote on this bill without real debate. I will continue to oppose trade deals this Administration negotiates that are contrary to the best interests of Maine and America."
