Boswell Announces Grant to Protect Iowa Children from Drug-Related Abuses

Press Release

Date: April 7, 2008
Location: Altoona, IA
Issues: Drugs

Today, at the Central Iowa Regional Drug Endangered Children Conference in Altoona, Congressman Leonard Boswell announced a $141,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to the Governor's office of Drug Control Policy in support of the Iowa Alliance for Dug Endangered Children (DEC). Boswell secured the funding in last year's Commerce, Justice and Science Fiscal Year '08 Appropriation's Bill.

"Children involuntarily exposed to illegal drugs are highly vulnerable, and it's imperative we do everything within our power to protect them," said Boswell. "That's why I supported this grant, to shield our youngest and most defenseless Iowans from the dangers associated with drug use, sales and manufacturing."

The new federal grant will be used to provide training, develop resource materials, pay for drug testing and support community initiatives involving dedicated teams of child welfare, health care, criminal justice and substance abuse treatment service providers.
