Dear Friends:

Earlier this month, the House Democrats passed a massive budget proposal which will once again increase taxes for hardworking American taxpayers. Not only does this budget raise taxes by $683 billion over 5 years it also increases discretionary spending above the President's budget by $22 billion in 2009 and by $276 billion over a five year period.

Too make matters worse, because of the Democrats budget, the resident of New Jersey are expected to see a $3,780 average tax hike next year. This is unacceptable. I believe its time that the government is held responsible for its horrific spending habits. The American taxpayers should no longer be expected to foot the bill for Washington.

While serving in Congress, I plan to continue fighting against wasteful spending. New Jerseyans already pay too much in state taxes; there is no reason that your federal taxes should continue to skyrocket too.

Sincerely,

Scott Garrett
Member of Congress

ISSUE OF THE WEEK: SUPPORT FOR THE PEOPLE OF TAIWAN

Last week, I joined some of my congressional colleagues in urging the United States to support Taiwan in its efforts to become part of the United Nations. We sent a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice asking her to oppose China's resistance to Taiwan's cry for liberty.

Taiwan is an important ally of the United States. Taiwan has offered aid in the wars against global terrorism, drug trafficking, money laundering, and copyright infringements. Moreover, the Taiwanese government is going to great lengths to protect U.S. citizens and U.S. interests in Taiwan and has provided generous humanitarian assistance in rebuilding Afghanistan and Iraq.

All around the globe, countries are awakening from totalitarianism, holding free elections, and liberalizing their economies. In Taiwan, we see a wonderful example of a nation that moved past one-party rule and became a full democracy—a nation that now uses liberty to fuel its economic engine. If the UN seeks to spread democracy and fight poverty, as it claims, Taiwan should be a part of that body, sharing its wisdom and experience with other nations who are striving to modernize.

I strongly believe that the Taiwanese people have the right to self determination. Their fight for democracy should be supported by the United States and other freedom-loving nations. I will continue to work to see that the voices of the Taiwanese people are heard.
