KINGSTON STATEMENT ON MISDIRECTED STIMULUS PACKAGE

Congressman Jack Kingston (GA-01) issued the following statement after voting against the economic stimulus package (HR 5140):

"How many times have you heard a politician tell you, ‘If you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime. This ‘stimulus' does nothing but give fish. If we want to create jobs, we need investment tax credits. This package gets an ‘A+' for politics and an ‘F' for economics and jobs." Kingston said.

"In 1975 and 2001, Congress sent out rebate checks but the action did not result in jobs or economic growth. It was the 2003 tax cuts that created 5.7 million new jobs, not the 2001 rebates.

"In two days and without a full hearing, Congress passed this $146 billion package yet we cannot pass a Farm Bill, reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration, reform immigration or Foreign Intelligence Surveillance. It is odd how Washington works."

HR 5140, the "Recovery Rebates and Economic Stimulus for the American People Act of 2008," passed the House 385-35. It now awaits action in the Senate.
