Lincoln Commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Statement

Date: Jan. 23, 2008
Location: Washington, DC

"As citizens across Arkansas and the United States prepare to celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I want to take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude for his universal message of compassion for which he fought so hard and sacrificed so much. Dr. King urged each and every one of us to dedicate ourselves to serving our communities -- to upholding human and civil rights for all people. This holiday is an important opportunity for us to renew our commitment to helping our friends, families, and neighbors in need. While working together for the common good, we can learn to recognize our similarities and appreciate the diversities that enrich our lives every day and serve as a wellspring of strength for our nation as a whole. By doing so, we can honor the legacy of Dr. King's courage, commitment, and vision of a brighter future."
