ENGEL SLAMS PROPOSED CUTS IN HOMELAND SECURITY

The White House proposal to cut anti-terror grants by more than half would endanger the country Congressman Eliot Engel said, especially the New York metropolitan area.

The Bush Administration proposed cutting homeland security grants to $1.4 billion for the year 2009 from $3.4 billion spent in fiscal 2007, Rep. Engel said, including some rail and port security programs.

"The anti-terror funds for the New York City region are already inadequate," said Rep. Engel, "and now the president wants to cut them even further. This is one of the busiest ports in the nations and the president says he wants to cut security, which is barely adequate now. Ports and trains are known targets for terrorists.

"This is how an accountant would plan national security, not a terrorism expert," said Rep. Engel

The 10-term congressman said security funds for areas that are known targets, and in New York City's case, one which has already been attacked, must be increased.

"The Bush Administration, which has squandered billions in tax cuts for the rich, is now trying to economize in our most vulnerable area." He said. "This cannot stand."
