Greenville News - In Greer, Thompson Touts Second Amendment Rights

Surrounded by an arsenal of weapons, Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson used a local gun shop Tuesday to affirm his support for the Second Amendment's guarantee of the public's right to own firearms.

"It's good to be among those who believe in the Constitution -- and all its amendments," Thompson said at Blue Ridge Shooting Sports after lovingly hefting a shotgun that had been handed to him.

"Pretty fancy, looking good," the actor and former Tennessee senator said of the gleaming weapon, proclaiming himself "pretty much a shotgun man these days."

Thompson said congressional Democrats, having been burned by their past gun control efforts, are steering clear of the issue these days. "They've decided that the American people have decided that the Second Amendment means what it says," Thompson said,

The issue may soon be off the table entirely, he suggested.

"I'm looking for some good news out of the (U.S.) Supreme Court," he said, referring to the court's landmark acceptance of a District of Columbia case challenging its stringent gun ownership law.
