The Winchester Sun - Beshear Challenges Fletcher on Morals

Democratic candidate for governor Steve Beshear told a crowd of Clark County voters Friday that when Republicans in Frankfort want to talk about ethics, morals and values, he says "bring it on."

"For years, we have allowed that other side to go out there and preach that false message that you can't be a person of faith and be a Democrat," he said. "We're not going to put up with that anymore."

Beshear, who is vying for office Nov. 6 against Republican incumbent Gov. Ernie Fletcher, addressed about 200 party faithful during a free breakfast organized by the Clark County Democratic Party at Cantuckee Diner.

. . .

On Friday, Beshear painted himself as a man of strong Christian faith, whose parents instilled in him a sense of responsibility and accountability and taught the importance of education.

"Those are the kind of values I grew up with," the candidate said. "I'm sure those are the kind of values you grew up with, and we need to make sure, all across this state, that everybody knows that's what we stand for."

He described the Fletcher administration as "immoral" for failing to support thousands of Kentucky children without health insurance and seniors who must choose between buying food or prescription medication.

If elected, Beshear said he would launch programs to help provide health coverage for children and help seniors pay for drugs.

"Those are the kind of things we stand for. Those are the kind of things that are going to help move this state forward," he said.
