Shea-Porter Responds to Defeat of Troop Rotation Plan

Webb Amendment Defeated in Senate 56 - 44

Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) today issued the following statement in response to the defeat of the proposal offered by Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) to set minimum requirements for soldiers' time at home between deployments.

"Military families woke up this morning to discover that the Bush Administration's supporters in the Senate have once again failed to stand up for our troops. Many soldiers have already faced extended tours, shortened leave times, and repeated deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. My heart goes out to our troops, and their families, who have already endured long separation from their loved ones," said Congresswoman Shea-Porter.

The amendment to the Senate's 2008 Defense Authorization bill would have mandated that troops be given at least as much time at home as the length of their most recent deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan.

This is the eighth time this year that Senate Republicans have obstructed a Democratic proposal to change course in Iraq.
