Remembering the Heroes and Sacrifices of 9/11

In response to the sixth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Congressman Tim Murphy (PA-18), released the following statement:

"Six years ago, the world changed before our eyes in a few short moments. We all remember where we were the day we witnessed such an evil deed none of us thought possible. In the face of such devastating tragedy, heroes were made and our nation became more united than ever before.

"That day the people aboard Flight 93 showed a collective resolve and courage unparalleled in history. Knowing their fate, they worked together to save countless lives in our nation's capital and Pennsylvania. Despite the enormous fear they were facing, the passengers waited until the plane passed over our communities in Allegheny County where our families work and go to school. Their incredible heroism and selflessness adverted what could have been an even bigger tragedy that day.

"Since that day when hundreds of firefighters and police officers rushed into the World Trade Center and Pentagon and up to the heavens, hundreds more have sacrificed in defense of our freedom. The men and women of our military have given their blood and sweat, sacrificed time away from their loved ones, and many have given their lives to fight terrorism. Still today, six years later, men and women are exhibiting their patriotism by signing up to wear the uniform of this great nation and defend its honor. They too are the heroes of September 11.

"Today the terrorists that attacked us are still calling for martyrs to rise against us. Their minds are filled with hatred and thoughts of violence. Their sentiment cannot and will not prevail. America must always remember how as a nation we came together six years ago, we must remember and honor the spirit of our heroes. Not just on the anniversary of 9/11, but every day. And we must pass that spirit on to future generations so they too understand the sacrifices these heroes made for our country."
