Rep. Fossella: Federal and State Officials to Assess Damage Next Week As First Step in Obtaining Federal Disaster Assistance

Congressman Vito Fossella today announced that federal and state emergency management officials, joined by his office, will conduct an on-site inspection of damage in Bay Ridge

and Sunset Park next week to determine if the area can be declared a federal major disaster zone - and thus eligible for disaster assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Fossella also spoke directly with Governor Spitzer this afternoon to provide a first-hand account of the damage in Brooklyn and to urge that a major disaster declaration be made to obtain federal assistance. Fossella also reached out to FEMA Administrator David Paulison with the same message.

"This is a critical step as we seek disaster assistance for Bay Ridge," Fossella said. "The team of inspectors will assess the damage and determine whether FEMA or the State can step in and provide financial aid to help residents recover. I've spoken with Governor Spitzer and federal officials today about the need for help and the widespread and significant damage in our community. I believe disaster relief can play an important role in helping residents of Bay Ridge and Sunset Park recovery from the storm. I will be working closely with the City and State officials in the coming days to ensure that resources are available for residents impacted by the storm and that every action is taken to provide comprehensive assistance for those in need."

The inspection of Bay Ridge will take place on Monday, August 13, with Fossella's office joining officials of FEMA and the New York State Emergency Management Office (SEMO). They will conduct a Preliminary Damage Assessment (PDA) of the borough to determine the magnitude and impact of the tornado.

The PDA is the first step in assessing the scope of damage and estimate repair costs. The State uses the results of the PDA to determine if the situation is beyond the combined capabilities of the State and local resources and to verify the need for supplemental Federal assistance. The PDA also identifies any unmet needs that may require immediate attention.
