Capito Calls Minimum Wage Increase a Victory for Workers

The minimum wage was increased 70 cents today, the first phase of an increase that will lead to the minimum wage reaching $7.25 per hour in July 2009. In response to today's increase, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) released the following statement:

"Today's pay raise for minimum wage workers is a long-overdue victory for many workers in West Virginia," said Rep. Capito. "I was proud to have supported this pay raise for minimum wage workers, and hope the Congress continues to implement pro-worker, pro-growth policies that keep taxes low on families while continuing to grow our economy and create jobs."

Today's minimum wage increase comes at a time when the unemployment rate is at historically low levels both nationally and in West Virginia. According to Workforce West Virginia, the unemployment rate in West Virginia was 4.5% in June, which matches the current national unemployment rate.
