Terry Announces NCLB Reform Bill to Support Nebraska Educators

Congressman Lee Terry today announced the introduction of bipartisan legislation to make common-sense improvements to the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) education law.

Terry held a press conference to highlight improvements to the "State and Local Education Flexibility Act" (H.R. 2946) this year. Representatives from the major national education organizations endorsing the bill spoke in support of H.R. 2946.

"The No Child Left Behind law was a tremendous step forward in improving the education of every child in the United States. However, it is clear to me that legitimate concerns exist within the law that must be addressed," Terry said. "This bill adopts the recommendations of our Nebraska educators to allow greater flexibility and local control. Nebraska has some of the best schools in the nation, but the federal government should support and recognize their excellent work with increased flexibility."

Congressman Terry regularly meets with teachers, school administrators, state education officials and parents regarding the implementation of NCLB. H.R. 2946 will provide states and local school districts greater flexibility, while still ensuring that children learn the skills they need to succeed and schools in need of improvement are identified. This legislation would address pressing concerns and improve NCLB as Congress reauthorizes the law during this session.

H.R. 2946 currently has 10 cosponsors, an equal number of Republican and Democrats endorsing the legislation, including Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, a Member of the House Education Committee, as the lead bipartisan cosponsor.
