HOUSE APPROVES PALLONE BILL SUPPORTING THE GOALS OF NATIONAL CLEAN BEACHES WEEK

The U.S. House of Representatives today unanimously approved a resolution introduced earlier this year by U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) that supports the goals and ideals of National Clean Beaches Week, which occurs this year between June 29th and July 5th.

The resolution recognizes the importance of America's beaches as key parts of the country's economy, natural heritage, and way of life. It also stresses the progress made in recent years to improve our shorelines and the need for strong policy to continue improving the quality of the nation's beaches.

"Today, the House showed its commitment to our beaches by unanimously supporting National Clean Beaches Week," Pallone said after the bill was approved by the House earlier today.

"As millions of Americans flock to the beach for the summer season, it is the perfect time for Congress to recognize their importance and reiterate our resolve to keep our beaches clean and safe," Pallone continued. "We've made great progress in restoring these national treasures over the last decade, but we must continue to protect our beaches so they can be enjoyed by future generations.

Besides supporting the week and recognizing the value of our beaches, the resolution also encourages all Americans to work to keep beaches safe and clean for the continued enjoyment of the public; expresses a renewed appreciation for beaches and an invigorated effort to protect them with an updated and integrated policy; and encourages individuals to engage in activities during this week to encourage stewardship and volunteerism along our coastlines.

Since its inception, National Clean Beaches Week commences over the seven-day week that includes July 5.

The New Jersey congressman, who co-chairs the Congressional Coastal Caucus, introduced the legislation earlier this year with his co-chair, U.S. Rep. Henry Brown (R-SC), as well as U.S. Reps. Lois Capps (D-CA) and Walter Jones (R-NC). As a co-chair of the Coastal Caucus, Pallone has worked consistently to promote sound coastal management policies and to secure adequate federal funding for shore protection projects.
