Statement on House Passage of S. 5, The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007

U.S. Representative Tom Allen issued the following statement today following House passage of S. 5, The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007 with a bipartisan majority of 247-176:

"Once again, both the House and the Senate have passed legislation to expand embryonic stem cell research that offers hope to millions of Americans who suffer from crippling spinal cord injuries and life-threatening illnesses including cancer, muscular dystrophy, diabetes, ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. Last year, President Bush exercised the first veto of his presidency on a similar bill, putting the ideology of a small minority ahead of the weight of scientific evidence, the health and well-being of the afflicted victims, the peace of mind of their families and the clear intent of the vast majority of the American people. Whether the issue is stem cell research, evolution science or the global menace of climate change, for this President ideology too often trumps sound science and the public will. His adherence to the demands of the most extremely conservative members of his political base is at odds with Americans who seek to cure disease and develop innovative products for the global market place. I urge the President to sign this bill, and if he does not, I appeal to the House and Senate to override his veto."
