KENNEDY ON STATE ATTORNEYS GENERAL SUPPORT FOR SUNSHINE ACT

Today, Senator Edward M. Kennedy released the following statement in response to the letter sent by 32 state attorneys generals in support of the Student Loan Sunshine Act. Kennedy is the author of the Act and components of it will be discussed tomorrow at the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee executive session.

"I very much appreciate the letter signed by 32 state attorneys general in support of the Student Loan Sunshine Act. Investigations by these state law enforcement officers have uncovered back-room deals between lenders and schools, conflicts of interest, and waste of taxpayer dollars. Their oversight has played an essential role in highlighting the need for systemic, industry-wide reform. I hope that my Senate colleagues will heed the advice of these attorneys general and join with me in passing the key elements of the Student Loan Sunshine Act, which we've incorporated into the higher education reauthorization bill our Committee will be considering tomorrow."
