New Jersey Congressmen Mark Tax Freedom Day

Today, New Jersey residents mark Tax Freedom Day, the day that taxpayers have finally earned enough to work off their tax obligation to the state and federal governments.

According to the non-partisan Tax Foundation, New Jersey residents have the third-highest tax burden in the entire country and had to work the first 130 days of this year to satisfy the taxman before seeing a single cent go toward their family budget priorities.

National Tax Freedom Day, marking the American average, came on April 30th this year, two days later than it did in 2006, and a full ten days before New Jersey residents had worked off their tax burden.

Remarkably, Tax Freedom Day comes to New Jersey just two days after Jersey Congressmen Scott Garrett and Mike Ferguson again rose to oppose a tax-and-spend Democrat budget that calls for the largest tax increase in the history of the United States and would cost New Jersey taxpayers an additional $4,904 per year by 2012, according to a new study by the non-partisan Heritage Foundation.

Marking Tax Freedom Day in Washington with fellow fiscally-responsible New Jersey Congressman Mike Ferguson, Congressman Garrett said, "While I'm glad to we can finally earn money to pay our mortgages and college tuitions instead of feeding the bureaucracy, I think that the vast majority of New Jerseyans would agree with me that 130 days of work just to satisfy the taxman is simply unacceptable. Unfortunately, if my Democrat colleagues stick to their budget plan, they'll be looking at a $4,900 tax hike and a Tax Freedom Day closer to Thanksgiving than Memorial Day."

"From federal taxes to rising property taxes, New Jersey residents face one of the highest total tax burdens in the nation," Ferguson said. "This crushing tax burden is making New Jersey more and more unaffordable for too many families."
