CONGRESSWOMAN JOHNSON TO BE DEMOCRATIC CHAIR OF THE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S ISSUES TASK FORCE

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson has agreed to co-chair the International Women's Issues Task Force, a subgroup of the Women's Caucus. The Women's caucus is a bipartisan Congressional Caucus for women's issues.

"I am extremely pleased to serve as the Democratic chairwoman of this task force," said Congresswoman Johnson. "Our numbers and power are growing and this is an opportunity to translate that increased presence into enhanced policy. Through the task force's work, women and girls across the globe can benefit from the leadership and influence of women in Congress."

As Democratic chair, Congresswoman Johnson will work with a Republican colleague to shape the caucus' agenda and strategy for the 110th Congress. Women's Caucus leaders asked Congresswoman Johnson to serve as Democratic Chair in light of her work as founder of the World of Women for World Peace Initiative.

She began the Peace Initiative in 2001 to bring greater visibility to the women who are victims of war and aggression and the women who undertake peacemaking, peacekeeping and peace-building activities in their communities.

The Women's caucus has a distinguished history of championing women's issues around the globe from Cambodia to Cairo to Beijing. It has worked to bring international attention to the plight of refugees and represented the Congress at U.N. world conferences on women and on population and development.

The Caucus has also served as an inspiration and a model worldwide for women parliamentarians - whose image of American democracy is shaped in part by the example of women from different political parties working together to improve the lives of women and families.

"The 110th Congress is a historic one not only for the Women's Caucus but for the nation," Congresswoman Johnson noted. "Serving under the leadership of the first woman Speaker with a record number of women Members, the Women's Caucus is uniquely poised to have a greater voice than ever before in shaping the agenda of the Congress and the nation."

U.S. Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson is the highest-ranking Texan on the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure. She represents the 30th Congressional District, which includes downtown Dallas, Northeast, East Oak Cliff & Pleasant Grove; all of Balch Springs, De Soto, Lancaster & Hutchins and parts of Cedar Hill, Duncanville, Glen Heights, Wilmer and Ovilla.
