Brady Opposes ‘Hate Crimes' Bill

U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady (R-The Woodlands) issued the following statement opposing the Democrat "hate crimes" bill passing the U.S. House today by a 237-180 vote.

"Violent crime against someone simply because of the color of their skin, their religion or because they are gay is despicable. No sentence is harsh enough in these cases. But equal justice under the law requires that all victims of violent crime deserve justice, not just a few special classes of people. So I oppose this bill."

"Also, there is a genuine concern among religious leaders that politically-motivated prosecutors could criminalize them simply for teaching their religious beliefs. Unfortunately, in these times that's a justified concern and another reason this bill should not become the law of the land."

Hate crimes legislation is also being opposed by a variety of conservative and pro-family organizations, including: AdvanceUSA, Christian Coalition, Eagle Forum, Family Research Council and the Traditional Values Coalition.
