Matheson Cites Scientific Study on New Nuke Warheads

Congressman Jim Matheson said the just-released report by an independent scientific organization on the proposed Reliable Replacement Warhead program raises serious questions about moving forward. Matheson is a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and sits on the Energy subcommittee.

The report was issued by the American Association for the Advancement of Science's Nuclear Weapons Complex Assessment Committee. The AAAS is the world's largest general scientific society and is the publisher of the journal Science.

"We know that America's nuclear weapons stockpile has been satisfactorily maintained for 15 years without nuclear testing. I question why we'd spend many millions of dollars on a program with speculative benefits-which may lead to renewed nuclear weapons testing-in the absence of more concrete information on the cost, the scope and the schedule. I will continue to monitor the funding requests for RRW by the Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration very closely," said Matheson. "I will keep Utahns informed of what steps the federal government proposes that could take us down the path of renewed nuclear weapons testing."
