CONGRESSMAN YOUNG CO-SPONSORS BILL TO ASSIST UNDER-HOUSED NATIVES

The Native American Home Ownership Opportunity Act of 2007 (H.R. 1676), of which Congressman for All Alaska Don Young is a co-sponsor, passed in the U.S. House of Representatives today by voice vote. This bill reauthorizes the program of the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development for loan guarantees for Indian Housing. According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the program is designed to offer home ownership, property rehabilitation, and new construction opportunities for eligible tribes, Indian Housing Authorities and Native American individuals and families wanting to own a home on trust land or land located in an approved Indian or Alaska Native area.

"Unfortunately, roughly 40% of Natives are under-housed right now," stated Congressman Young earlier today. "Extending this program is extremely beneficial to the Native population in our country, and to the Alaska Native population in my state. We need to continue to fund good programs such as these that help provide affordable, sustainable housing for the population. Programs such as these aid people in getting their feet on the ground and providing for themselves and their families. I can only be supportive of a bill that provides for the people of our Nation."
