Capps Praises House Passage Of Responsible Democratic Budget

Congresswoman Lois Capps today praised the House's passage of a responsible Democratic budget (H. Con. Res. 99).

"This budget is the first step to ending the record high deficits and harmful cuts to important programs brought on by six years of Bush Administration economic policies," said Capps, a nurse and former member of the Budget Committee. "The Democratic-led House is delivering on our promise for a fiscally responsible New Direction for our country.

"I used to sit on the Budget committee and year after year I had to watch as the Bush Administration's misguided budgets were passed on party line votes," said Capps. "Today, I was proud to cast my vote in favor of this Democratic budget that better reflects the Central and South Coasts' priorities and values.

"As a former school nurse, I am particularly pleased the budget expands the State Children's Health Insurance Program so we can ensure all of our children always have access to quality health care. Our budget also provides critical support for our soldiers and our veterans. It includes funding for the largest increase for veterans' health care in the history of our country - allocating $3.5 billion more than the President's budget," noted Capps. "It also funds initiatives to protect our environment by investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency programs to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, reduce global warming, and promote new technologies that can create American jobs. Under this disciplined and fair-minded approach, the Democratic plan balances the budget, and even creates a surplus, by 2012. This is a budget that the American people can finally be proud of."
