Shuster Applauds Bold Initiatives in State of the Union

Congressman Bill Shuster released the following statement in response to the President's State of the Union Address:

"President Bush came before Congress this evening and laid out some bold proposals for America's future.

The American people sent a clear message to Congress that they want to see a change in the tone of Washington. Americans want to see less partisan rancor and more action. The Democrat's response to the President's speech and their actions in the days ahead will be a test of their determination, will and ability to fulfill this promise.

The President's plan to reduce our dependence on foreign oil is a welcome sign of the administration's commitment to strengthening our energy security through the use of domestically produced alternative fuels.

I agree with the President - we must break our addiction to foreign oil. However, I am disappointed that President Bush did not highlight coal as an important source for liquid fuel. Pennsylvania has tremendous coal reserves, and the production of liquid fuel from coal is an economically viable way to lessen our dependence on foreign oil producers.

The President's proposal to provide tax deductions for the purchase of health insurance is a bold initiative that deserves a fair, open and honest debate. I am open to any proposal that allows competition in the healthcare market, lowers costs, and allows all Americans the opportunity to provide health coverage for the families. I am interested in learning more about the President's plan and I will work with my colleagues to pass meaningful reform.

The President has given Congress his vision for the year ahead. I look forward to working with my colleagues, both Republican and Democrat, in the months ahead as these proposals come to Congress in a bipartisan and open process."
