Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold On GAO Findings of Continued Fraud, Waste, and Abuse within the Federal Emergency Management Agency

December 6, 2006

"The GAO's bleak assessment of FEMA is yet another chapter in this sad story of the effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Over one year after these hurricanes, thousands of families are still struggling to get back on their feet. GAO's findings confirm the news stories we've heard for months about fraud and mismanagement in the agency. FEMA clearly has deep systematic problems that must be corrected. While I agree with GAO that FEMA must put in place oversight mechanisms that will prevent future fraud and mismanagement, we must also do more to assist the survivors of the 2005 hurricanes as they continue working to rebuild their lives."

Senator Feingold introduced the Gulf Coast Housing Accessibility Act in September in an effort to bring immediate and long-term housing assistance to low-income survivors of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
