Thune Named Chief Deputy Whip

Today Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi, the incoming Senate Republican Whip, announced that Senator John Thune of South Dakota will serve as Chief Deputy Whip in the Senate Republican Whip organization for the 110th Congress.

"In his first term in the Senate, John has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, and I want to put his clout to work in developing the whip strategy to get the votes for our priorities," Senator Lott said. "John will be actively engaged in our leadership team."

"I am honored Senator Lott has asked me to serve as his Chief Deputy Whip. I look forward to assisting Senator Lott and the rest of the Republican Leadership as we work to make America stronger. Senator Lott was one of the most effective Whips in both the House and the Senate and I look forward to learning from one of this chamber's most experienced members. I am proud to have the opportunity to represent the people of South Dakota in this role," said Thune.

Senator Lott has appointed seven Senators to serve as Deputy Whips to represent all regions of the country. They are:

Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina
Senator Larry Craig of Idaho
Senator Norm Coleman of Minnesota
Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma
Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine
Senator David Vitter of Louisiana
