Spivack asks Castle to Call for Hastert's and Boehner's Resignation

Newark, DE, October 3, 2006 - Dennis Spivack, Democratic Candidate for the US House of Representatives, today called on Republican Representative Michael Castle (R-DE) to seek the resignations of House Republican leaders Dennis Hastert (R-IL) and John Boehner (R-OH) and demanded that Castle return the money that Boehner raised for him two weeks ago.

Both Hastert and Boehner admit to having been told of Rep. Mark Foley's (R-FL) inappropriate emails to underage congressional pages at least four months ago. Despite this, said Spivack, the two men did nothing - even leaving Foley at the head of the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus and continuing to send him congressional pages.

Spivack went on to say that "Foley's actions were particularly reprehensible in light of the fact that he co-chaired the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus, but the real issue here is that Hastert and Boehner put their party above the safety and well-being of underage congressional pages, after multiple red flags. It is reprehensible that, knowing what they knew, Boehner and Hastert still let Foley write the child predator laws. As a candidate I am disappointed; as a father I am disgusted."

Spivack continued "This is typical of what we have come to expect from a House, Senate and Presidency controlled by people who routinely put narrow interests above those of the country as a whole."

"Representative Castle portrays himself as a force for moderation and good government who stands apart from the corruption that has marked Republican rule. This is his chance to demonstrate his independence and strength of character by joining in the calls for their resignations and donating the money recently raised for him by Boehner."

Many Republicans have already called for such resignations. Spivack noted that this is even closer to Castle because he recently had a fundraiser in Wilmington that featured John Boehner. Dennis Hastert is the Speaker of the House of Representatives. John Boehner is House Majority Leader.
