MARTINEZ APPLAUDS PASSAGE OF MILITARY COMMISSIONS BILL

U.S. Senator Mel Martinez today applauded the Senate's passage of S. 3930, the Military Commissions bill. The bill outlines how to treat and interrogate terrorists in a fair and just manner without compromising intelligence sources and methods.
Senator Martinez said:

"We must remember that these detainees are terrorists engaged in an ongoing war against the United States. Therefore, it is important that these terrorists are tried in military commissions that afford a fair and reliable prosecution consistent with our national security interests. I believe this bill does that.

"Our country must respect the human dignity of all individuals, but we must remember that these terrorist combatants that have been captured have been engaged in an ongoing violent and destructive war against the U.S. and all we believe in.

"This bill protects the integrity of U.S. intelligence and the methods used for gathering it. It ensures the safety of soldiers in the field, and our citizens at home. This legislation sets a proper balance between two important American values: security and liberty."
