Press Release - Lamberti: We need to protect traditional marriage

DES MOINES — Sen. Jeff Lamberti, candidate for Congress in Iowa's 3rd District, criticized his opponent for today's vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment. Rep. Boswell voted against the measure that received a simple majority, but failed to reach the two-thirds majority needed to advance a constitutional amendment.

"My opponent pandered to the liberal extremists in his party by opposing this amendment," Lamberti said. "We need to protect the institution of marriage from liberal interest groups intent on using the court system to change our way of life."

"I am an avowed supporter of traditional family values and in Congress I will advocate for Iowa's families," Lamberti said. "Iowans overwhelmingly support traditional marriage; they need a congressman who will represent their interests, not special interests." Lamberti said.

Rep. Boswell also opposed a federal marriage amendment in a vote in September of 2004. Earlier that same year, he opposed a bill that ensured no state would be required to accept same-sex marriage licenses granted in another state. In 1999, Boswell opposed an amendment that would prevent joint adoption of children by homosexuals in Washington D.C.
