Press Release - Gov. Schwarzenegger Highlights His International Efforts to Increase Employment, More Than 600,000 Jobs Created Since Nov. 2003

After touring an airline maintenance facility that has added more than 125 jobs this year, Gov. Schwarzenegger touted the contributions his international trade missions have made to California businesses and the 636,000 new jobs created since he took office.

"Nothing makes me feel better than seeing business returning to California and thriving like this great United Services Maintenance Facility," said Gov. Schwarzenegger at San Francisco International Airport. "Last year, before I went on my trade mission to China, I sent a letter to Air China telling them about the great facility here and how we'd love their business. When we went to China for our trade mission last November, a United executive came with us. Air China soon after signed a multi-million-dollar contract with United Services that means Air China jet engines are serviced right here in San Francisco."

Gov. Schwarzenegger's efforts have contributed to Air China's expanded maintenance agreement with United Services, the maintenance division of United Airlines. Based at SFO, United Services will overhaul Boeing 747 and 777 engines for Air China. (Attached is the text of the letter Gov. Schwarzenegger sent to Air China.)

As the gateway to the Pacific Rim, California is uniquely placed to extend the enormous role international trade and tourism already plays in our economy. A half million California jobs are tied directly to the $100 billion foreign companies have invested in our state. Another million jobs are tied to California trade and exports, and nearly a fifth of all U.S. foreign trade passes through California - an amazing $436 billion of goods just last year. More than 40 percent of the nation's total container cargo is handled by California's ports in Long Beach, Los Angeles and Oakland.

Fulfilling a 2003 campaign promise, Gov. Schwarzenegger traveled to Tokyo, Japan in 2004 and to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, China in 2005. During each of those trips, the Governor used his celebrity to advertise California's products to the world and used his stature to bring together business leaders and government officials. Gov. Schwarzenegger's next planned trade mission is to Mexico in November.
