Stabenow Comments on President Bush's Political Visit

Bush's Refusal to Meet with Big Three, Address Michigan Issues "Inexcusable"

Lansing-Senator Debbie Stabenow today released the following statement concerning President Bush's political trip to Michigan. President Bush will be in Michigan today raising campaign cash for state Republicans after flying in and out of Flint, a city that has been hit hard by his failed economic policies. The President will be holding no public or policy related events, and even though he will be fundraising in the backyard of the Big Three automakers he has once again refused to take the time to sit down with their CEO's.

"It is inexcusable that President Bush would once again come to Michigan for a political event and not take the time to meet with the CEO's of the Big Three automakers. President Bush should be focused on the issues that matter to Michigan families and businesses, like creating a level playing field for trade, lowering the skyrocketing cost of health care, protecting workers pensions, and making a real investment in education and innovation," said Stabenow. "Given the President's dismal record on these issues it is not surprising that he would spend his time on politics while turning his back on Michigan's workers, families and businesses. We need a new direction in this country when it comes to manufacturing and economic policy, not another blind endorsement of the failed Bush economic policies that have cost us jobs and threaten our Michigan way of life."

Earlier this week Senator Stabenow wrote a letter to the President urging him to take some time out of his busy fundraising schedule to sit down with the Big Three CEO's and discuss the challenges they are currently facing and the role that the federal government could take in addressing those issues.
