Governor Perdue Receives Endorsement of 76 Sheriffs

Strong bipartisan support includes 37 Democrats

Governor Sonny Perdue announced today the endorsement of 76 sheriffs from across Georgia.

"You can't have an educated and growing Georgia without it first being safe, and our sheriffs help us do just that," said Governor Perdue. "It's been an honor to work hand in hand with our sheriffs and other law enforcement to make our state safer. It is humbling to have so many of their endorsements."

Of the 76 sheriffs endorsing Governor Perdue, 37 are Democrats. This represents strong bipartisan support of the Governor's efforts to strengthen public safety over the past four years.

"Law enforcement is not and should not be a partisan issue," said Governor Perdue. "I think we're sending that signal with the number of Republican and Democrat sheriffs who have endorsed our campaign."

By listening to and working with sheriffs, Governor Perdue has addressed their needs and the concerns of their communities through numerous legislative and budget initiatives including:

• leading a bipartisan effort to pass the 2004 Child Protection Package, which ensured Georgia is no longer the only state in the nation without a child abuse felony statute that includes criminally negligent behavior;

• passing critical criminal justice reform to ensure prosecutors have the requisite tools to remove dangerous criminals from the streets;

• strengthening the rights of crime victims by making criminals pay their victims for damages and losses in addition to serving their jail time;

• removing barriers impeding the use of Levi's Call, Georgia's version of the Amber Alert;

• allocating $50 million to increase capacity in our prison system by more than 4,400 beds to alleviate the pressure on county jails and ensure criminals serve the time warranted for their crimes;

• leading the fight against methamphetamine by strengthening the criminal penalties for its manufacture, transfer, and distribution;

• establishing a 15 agent "MethForce" at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to confront and combat the meth plague that is destroying lives and communities in our state.
