STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR GEORGE E. PATAKI

"I am extremely disappointed in the EPA's surprising decision to allow yet another delay in the start date for the dredging of PCBs from the upper Hudson River.

"From the outset, New York State fought for a comprehensive cleanup plan to restore the health of this historic waterway. We have worked with local communities and the EPA throughout this process, and believe that the EPA should advance this project as planned.

"Each time the cleanup timetable is pushed back, people lose confidence that this important project will ever happen. The restoration of the river has been a major priority of my Administration, and we must ensure that the EPA and GE uphold their commitment to clean up the PCB-contaminated sections of the river. We also will continue to push the EPA to recognize the needs of the host communities.

"Many communities along the shores of the Hudson are rediscovering economic and recreational opportunities that this great river has to offer. Yet as long as contamination remains in certain sections of the Hudson River, these opportunities are not available.

"I urge the EPA to refocus and redouble its efforts to get this important project underway as soon as possible."
