Udall Urges Caution On Frederick Waste Dump Expansion Plan

(Washington, DC) - Congressman Mark Udall (D-Eldorado Springs) today urged the Frederick Board of Trustees to seriously consider residents' concerns about a medical waste company's plans to expand a waste processing facility in the town.

Medical Systems of Denver, Inc. (MSDI) recently filed an application to expand an existing facility in Frederick in order to process medical infectious waste. The facility is located near four schools and two neighborhoods. The board of trustees denied the application earlier this year, but they will revisit the issue at their May 25 meeting.

In a letter to Frederick Mayor Eric Doering, Udall says his office has been contacted by several citizens of Frederick and the Tri-town area who oppose the facility expansion and he hopes that the town will seriously consider their concerns.

"Clearly the nature of these products raises serious health concerns to members of nearby neighborhoods. These citizens have also expressed worries about the impact of this proposed expansion on their property values, as well as about the dangers of increased truck traffic at high speeds near the facility," says Udall. "As the elected representatives of Frederick, the board has the sole authority to approve or deny this application, and I fully respect your community's right to do so. I know that the Town will seriously consider the concerns expressed by its citizens with this proposal."

Udall represents a portion of southwest Weld County which includes the towns of Frederick, Firestone and Dacono.
