Idaho Delegation Comments on Japan Beef Opening

Idaho's congressional delegation, Senators Mike Crapo and Larry Craig and Representatives Mike Simpson and C.L. "Butch" Otter, issued the following statement regarding the news that Japan will allow U.S. beef imports:

"It is welcome news that Japan has finally re-opened its border to our beef products. Japan is an important market, and its closure was not justified or reasonable.

"U.S. beef is among the safest in the world. USDA's surveillance program has proven that the prevalence of BSE in our herd is very low.

"While the re-opening of the market is great news, the Japanese should abide by international standards and open its markets to all U.S. beef products regardless of age. We will continue to work with my colleagues to see that full beef trade is resumed."
