Musgrave Takes From The Poor, Gives To The Rich

(Fort Collins, CO) Today President Bush signed a $70 billion election year tax bill passed by the Republican House and Senate last week. Dubbed the "Tax Increase Prevention Bill," many economists are crying foul and stressing that the legislation is little more than a giveaway to the wealthiest people in America. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave voted for the bill.
"Marilyn Musgrave says she's protecting our way of life, but whose way of life is she really protecting?" asked Representative Angie Paccione, the Democratic candidate running against Musgrave in Colorado's 4th Congressional District. "This is just another example of how Marilyn is out of touch with the values in the 4th District, and is completely in touch with the culture of corruption in Washington."
According to the Tax Policy Institute, the real beneficiaries are the wealthythose with incomes of over $1 million. They receive a whopping $42,000 tax break. Households that make between $20,000 and $30,000 a year receive a paltry $9. Those that fall into the $50,000 to $75,000 household income range receive, on average, $110.
Paccione noted, "This is nothing more than a giveaway to the rich. It should be called the Reverse Robin Hood Bill.' We need a tax policy that supports working class families."
The National Women's Law Center noted that 77 percent of all American households will, on average, receive a tax break of approximately $30, which is not even enough to fill up their gas tanks.
"This giveaway to the wealthiest of Americans comes right on the heels of cuts Congress made to student loans, Medicaid, and other essential services," Paccione said. "We can do better. It's time for real leadership for a change."
