Mac Collins Meets With President Bush On Federal Spending

The President to implement Congressman Collins' call to reign in congressional spending.

Washington (D.C.) - Former Congressman Mac Collins met with President George W. Bush at the White House to express his concerns over the subject of excessive "pork barrel" spending by members of Congress.

After meeting with Congressman Collins, President Bush issued the following statement: "Today, I'm sending Congress legislation that will meet standards and give me the authority to strip special spending and earmarks out of a bill, and then send them back to Congress for an up or down vote. By passing this version of the line item veto, the administration will work with the Congress to reduce wasteful spending, reduce the budget deficit, and ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely."

Following this meeting Congressman Collins stated: "I am very thankful that the President acted so quickly to respond to the wishes the people of Georgia have expressed to me during my campaign against Democrat Jim Marshall. Congress has been spending our money like its pouring it out of a boot, and the President's proposal of a line item veto will go a long way to stop this type of excessive waste. During my twelve years in Congress, I have championed both cutting spending and lowering taxes. I am pleased that I have been able to use my relationship with the President to share with him the concerns of the folks that I've heard on the campaign trail and offer them the principled representation they deserve."
