Poll Shows Burns In Statistical Dead Heat With Barrow

(SAVANNAH, GA) -Max Burns, former Congressman and candidate for Georgia's new 12th District, today released a poll showing him in a statistical dead heat with Athens Congressman John Barrow, trailing by just one point eight months before Election Day. The survey was conducted by Public Opinion Strategies (POS) on February 20-21, 2006, among 400 likely voters in Georgia's new 12th District and had a margin of error of ±4.9 percent.

"This poll confirms what we are hearing all across the new 12th District, voters want a Congressman that is like them and shares their southeast Georgia values," says Burns. "It's clear that voters are responding to our message of lower taxes, a strong economy that provides jobs and opportunities for our communities, and staying the course to win the War on Terror. While we are pleased with the progress we've made, we'll continue to work just as hard to earn the support of every voter in the 12th District."

In a memorandum of key findings prepared for Burns, POS pollster Glen Bolger reports:

* Max Burns in a statistical dead-heat on the ballot test against John Barrow - 42% to 43%, with 15% undecided.

* John Barrow has an anemic re-elect score - 28% say they will re-elect Barrow while 35% want a new person, and 34% say it depends.

* Despite being out of office for more than one year, Max Burns has higher favorables (84% name ID, with 48% favorable and 14% unfavorable) than John Barrow (70% name ID, with 30% favorable and 14% unfavorable).

"Max Burns is in a statistical dead-heat with John Barrow, trailing by just one point," said Bolger. "Barrow has not been able to establish himself with voters in this district, with a pathetic re-elect and very low favorables for an incumbent Congressman. Voters are ready to bring Burns back to Congress."
