The Barrow Immigration Proposal: Amnesty For The "11 Million Illegal Aliens"

(Savannah, Georgia) - Athens Congressman John Barrow yesterday unveiled his immigration reform policy that includes amnesty for the estimated 11 million illegal aliens who are currently in the United States and freeze anyone else who might want to legally enter our country. The Barrow proposal didn't come to voters in the new 12th District, but rather in an interview to the Boston Globe, a liberal, northeast newspaper.

As reported by the Boston Globe, "In Barrow's view, the United States is bearing the brunt of a ‘tsunami' of immigration, and he doesn't see why the country needs any more immigrants right now. ‘We have 11 million illegal aliens we need to do a good job of assimilating into the country first,' he says."

"What a radical proposal - America should absorb the 11 million illegal aliens that have broken the law and entered our country illegally," said Burns. "Folks all across the 12th District tell me they want a responsible solution to our immigration crisis and amnesty is not the answer."

"Fancy words to the Boston Globe won't change the fact that John Barrow supports amnesty for all the illegal aliens already in the United States," said Burns. "What is more outrageous is that he wants to shun those who want to work through the process legally and become a productive member of a guest worker program."

On March 30th, Burns reiterated his long held position on immigration reform, which includes:

* Deport illegal immigrants who are criminals, restrict government benefits from illegal aliens and substantially increase the penalties for committing document and benefit fraud;
* Secure our borders and enforce the current laws on the book;
* Create an effective legal guest worker program that does not include amnesty in any form; and
* Require illegal immigrants to return to their home countries and apply for legal access to our country through the new guest worker program

"I welcome the benefits that legal immigrants bring to the United States. The agriculture community desperately needs legal workers to fill those jobs when Americans cannot be found to do the work, but Georgians have told me they are opposed to granting legal status to those who disregarded our current immigration laws and illegally entered the United States. Rewarding illegal behavior with legal status and providing a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants is just plain wrong."
