Good Education News: Where Is Sanford?

Columbia - May 26, 2006 - This week the National Assessment of Education Progress report in science was released, and South Carolina was one of only five states that improved from 2000 to 2005 in both grades tested.

That was great news to all of our hardworking students and educators, and congratulations are certainly in order!

After waiting a few days in vain for words of congratulations to come out of the Governor's office, Tommy Moore is issuing his own.

"Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our teachers, students and administrators, South Carolina has been recognized as one of the top five states in the nation in science improvement," he said. "While we certainly have work to do in our education system, when we have achieved such a clear and important success, we should celebrate it and give credit where credit is due."

Moore has been critical of the Governor for the "flood of negativism" that streams from his administration when it comes to South Carolina public schools.

"There are talented and dedicated teachers and hardworking students in every public school in our state," he said. "Over the past several years, we have posted many successes, but listening to Mark Sanford, you'd never know it. It seems public school success just doesn't fit in with his narrow agenda."

With the support of out-of-state special interest groups, Sanford has tried to take money out of South Carolina public schools and give it to the wealthiest families in the state through his proposed school voucher program. Moore says that when he is Governor, "the assault on public education will come to a screeching halt."
