Statement from Jim Nussle on Maytag Closing in Newton

Jim Nussle released the following statement today in response to news that Whirlpool plans to close the Maytag factory in Newton, Iowa:

"I am greatly disappointed and saddened by Whirlpool's decision to close Maytag in Newton. My heart goes out to the dedicated workers, families and entire community of Newton who will need our assistance during this difficult time. We need to ensure these folks choose to stay in Iowa by offering workforce training and education so they have the ability to take advantage of increasing job opportunities in the new career fields of the 21st Century.

"Today's news is another sign we must work to improve Iowa's business climate by refocusing our efforts on growing our economy from within if we want to attract and retain entrepreneurs, offer exciting job opportunities and allow our homegrown businesses to thrive. We must give farmers, small businesses, workers, entrepreneurs and retirees reasons to choose Iowa, not excuses to leave the state with their talent and their resources," concluded Nussle.
