Rep. Kitts Introduces Bill To Toughen Penalties For Felony Crimes Committed With Guns

March 9, 2006

Salem, OR—State Representatives Derrick Kitts (R-Hillsboro) this week introduced a bill to establish tough mandatory minimum sentences for the discharge of a firearm during commission of a felony crime. If the firearm was discharged during the crime, the minimum sentence would be 20 years. If the discharge of the firearm resulted in serious physical injury or death, the minimum sentence would be life imprisonment.

The bill, modeled on similar "10-20-life" laws enforced in other states, would establish a minimum sentence of 10 years imprisonment for the possession of a firearm during commission of a felony crime. If the firearm was discharged during the crime, the minimum sentence would be 20 years. If the discharge of the firearm resulted in serious physical injury or death, the minimum sentence would be life imprisonment.

"People who use guns to commit felony crimes ought to be punished," said Rep. Kitts. "This bill is not about restricting gun rights; it will toughen penalties for criminals."
