NELSON STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF ZARQAWI AND PROGRESS IN IRAQ

Nebraska's Senator Ben Nelson issued the following statement today on the death of al Qeada leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and progress in Iraq:

"The U.S. military and the Iraqi military forces should be congratulated for the successful coordination and execution of the operation that resulted in the elimination of al Qaeda's top leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

"As one of the most visible leaders of terrorism and sectarian violence in Iraq, this is a significant development in advancing the security and stability of Iraq and it is a victory in the war against terrorism. Coupled with the seventeen raids on known al Qaeda locations, this is a considerable blow to al Qeada both in terms of Zarqawi's death and the intelligence gathered on al Qeada operations. We can be proud of this achievement and we must remain focused on our mission in Iraq. Obstacles still exist; the insurgency is not over and challenges remain."
