SHUSTER APPLAUDS FAMILIES' EFFORTS, APPRECIATES CONGRESS LISTENING TO THEIR VOICES

Washington, DC - Congressman Bill Shuster applauded the efforts by the family members of the passengers and crew aboard Flight 93 as well as Chairman Charles Taylor today after the recent announcement that the federal funding will be included in this year's appropriations.

The Interior Appropriations Subcommittee worked to finalize the legislation today, and the $5 million for Fiscal Year 2007 to acquire land for the memorial was included. Recently, Shuster sent a letter to the subcommittee requesting that the funding be included. Congressman Shuster released the following statement:

"This is great news because it brings the Flight 93 National Memorial one step closer to reality. We're talking about a memorial that will commemorate America's heroes who fought the first counterattack in today's War on Terror. They were ordinary Americans who rose up, just like at Lexington and Concord. These heroes were victorious, and their actions saved lives and protected our symbol of democracy - the U.S. Capitol."

"I understand the concerns Chairman Taylor had, but I appreciate him listening to the voices of the family members and including the funding."

"We need to always remember the courage, patriotism and selfless actions by the passengers and crew aboard Flight 93, and this national memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, will be there to tell their story of heroism. They are a shining example to America's future generations."

"The families came to Capitol Hill last week to persuade members of Congress to include the funding, and that's exactly what they did."
