Crowley Joins TIAA-CREF Volunteers at Queens Youth Facility

CROWLEY JOINS TIAA-CREF VOLUNTEERS AT EDUCATION FACILITY FOR AREA AT-RISK YOUTH

Jackson Heights, Queens - U.S. Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-07), a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, today joined employees from TIAA-CREF volunteering with educational activities for area at-risk children at local education facility 82nd Street Academics. TIAA-CREF, one of the largest financial service providers in the world, is the leading provider of retirement services for the academic, medical, cultural and research fields.

"Today, we are witnessing how a key business in the financial service community recognizes the importance of the local community," Congressman Crowley said. "I am proud to join these outstanding individuals from TIAA-CREF in volunteering to help provide the youth of Jackson Heights and Queens with these great, educational opportunities. I thank the employees of TIAA-CREF for their wonderful effort in giving back for the greater good."

The volunteers from TIAA-CREF helped with after school program activities for children ages 5 to 12 years at 82nd Street Academics, a 32-year-old community education facility that serves over 350 students largely from the Jackson Heights neighborhood.

These activities included "The Klein Project," which involved volunteers creating a brightly painted, colorful artistic canvas with kindergartners, and providing one-on-one tutoring for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

"Since 1974, 82nd Street Academics has provided after school programs, tutoring and other important activities that are vital for students wanting to improve their academic performance. It is great to see this important institution of the community continue to flourish, and receive the voluntary help of businesses like TIAA-CREF," Congressman Crowley said.

A large portion of the students using the services of 82nd Street Academics are minorities and immigrants living in Jackson Heights. Approximately 85 percent of the area population is of Latino heritage. The remaining 15 percent are a combination of Asian, Indian and different European backgrounds.
